A researcher group at the institute of Food Research led by Professor Richard Mithen has provided for the first time the connection between Prostate Cancer and broccoli. They said eating one or more portions of broccoli every week can reduce the risk of protest cancer. As you probably know, protaste cancer is the most common non-skin skin cancer for males in western countries.
The study was done on two groups of men who at risk of developing prostate cancer, the first group added 400g of broccoli, and the second groups added 400g of pea to their normal diet every week for about 12 months. Tissue samples were taken from the patient’s prostate gland before the start of the trail and after 6 and 12 months, then these tissues genes were measured and examined using affymetrix microarray technology.
After several analysis and studies, the team concluded that there were more changes in gene expression in men who were on the broccoli-rich diet than the pea diet. Moreover, these changes may be associated with the reduction in the risk of developing cancer.
Just to mention that broccoli is not the only food that fights prostate cancer, but other vegetables have shown evidence of reducing the risk of developing the cancer. “Other fruits and vegetables have been shown to also reduce the risk of prostate cancer and are likely to act through other mechanisms,” says Professor Mithen. So, stay healthy by keeping your green food always in your mind.
