A healthy back is strait and strong, moves easily and of course is free of any pain. Now, when you have pain in any area of the back for long periods of time, this is called chronic back injury, or chronic back pain. What causes chronic back pain? Do you have such a pain?
There are several causes for back pain, these are the most common:
-
Many times the cause of chronic back pain is unknown
-
The Most common cause of back pain is poor posture
-
Normal people’s activities might cause the pain such as lifting heavy objects and sports.
-
Overweight definitely could increase back pain
-
Some types of arthritis.
I guess we now can add smoking to the above list because a new study by The Robert Koch Institute has linked smoking to frequent back pain; they have also said that smoking has a great impact on your back.
The institute interviewed over 8000 people back in 2003, from different backgrounds, race, and sex. They asked these people several questions related to smoking and back pain. After the study the researchers found smokers or former smokers suffer chronic back pain much more often than do non-smokers. People who had consumed tobacco for more than 16 years had a two-fold greater probability of suffering chronic back pain than people who had smoked for less than 10 years.
On the other hand, the frequency with which the subjects consumed tobacco and the quantities smoked did not play a role.
The authors of the study pointed out that tobacco consumption does not necessarily cause chronic back pain. It is just as possible that people with chronic back pain smoke to alleviate the pain, they said.
