Virus Might Cause Prostate Cancer

prostate cancer caused by virusProstate cancer is the number two killer after lung cancer among men in Britain. Over 35,000 men are diagnosed with prostate cancer every year, and almost 10,000 of them have a very aggressive form and they die within 18 moths only from the initial diagnoses.

A new study revealed a very important finding that might save thousands of lives every year, scientists from Utah University in the U.S found that prostate cancer might be caused by a virus called xenotropic murine leukaemia virus (XMRV).

The scientists want to kill the cancer from its roots by developing a vaccine against the XMRV virus, but the big question becomes, would genetics and environment or even another virus cause breast and stomach tumors?

Many researches were skeptical about the new finding, “It will still be some time until it is understood whether the XMRV virus is a potential cause of prostate cancer in men.” Dr Helen Rippon, of the Prostate Cancer Charity.
