This baby boy – Alex Gonzaga was born in New Zealand with 3.3kg tumor inside his stomach. Doctors saved Alex’s life and removed the cancer tumor within two hours.
The baby looked like he was heavily pregnant – such was the size of the tumour that was growing in his stomach.
Doctors at Wellington Hospital in New Zealand said that Alex on a his way to full recovery after they performed two-hour intensive surgery to remove it. They also hope that Alex will be able to return to his village home in East Timor, north of Australia, by the end of the week.
‘The tumour would have eventually killed him if the medical team hadn’t carried out the operation,’ said Mr Bill Day, a hospital official.
‘It was beginning to crush crucial organs so it was vital the operation was carried out immediately. The reaction by the medical team has been fantastic, with everyone pitching in to save Alex’s life.’
The surgical team was so greatful that the surgery went really well, and Alex is on his way to recovery. Mr Bredon Bowkett, head of the surgical team, said: ‘It’s not just one child that benefits.
‘It benefits the kids we treat here in New Zealand because it adds to our experience – and when the child goes home the villagers see positive results. It’s very rewarding.’
