6 Ways to Treat Nasal Congestion or Allergies Nasal congestion and other related allergies can be caused by many factors including colds, dust and flu amongst others. They can also be as a result of heredity. Children from families with a long history of allergies may portray the same allergic reactions but they may not necessarily develop allergic diseases.

These allergies can be manifested in various ways including asthma, hay fever or allergic rhinitis as it is known in the medical circles, sinusitis, as well as food allergies.

The causes indeed are varied but so are the remedies. Some will take longer to eradicate and may require a combination of remedies, however it is important to involve the assistance of a physician if the condition deteriorates.

1. Antihistamines

Sinus congestion is a condition that is brought forth by the inflammation of the sinuses “sinusitis“. This inflammation may be caused by allergies or viral infections. It is a very uncomfortable condition resulting into labored breathing and can progress to cause severe headaches. The most effective treatment is the one that reduces the inflammation and also impedes on any sinus swelling. Antihistamines have been touted as the best as they hamper the triggering of any allergic reactions from the body. The body, upon coming into contact with factors triggering allergic reactions, leads to the production of histamines resulting into swollen sinuses. Antihistamines inhibit this process and are effective in reducing any symptoms that might arise from allergies. They work better when combined with decongestants. They are made in a variety of forms, from tablets to liquids and eye-drops amongst other formulations. They have a number of side effects although they are not adverse. Side effects such as dry mouth, dizziness, confusion and unclear vision may be experienced. Others may cause drowsiness and might not function well if mixed with some other medications and hence it is crucial to seek doctor’s assistance.

2. Inhalation therapy

Inhalation therapy is a term used to denote respiratory or breathing treatments administered to restore breathing functionality hampered by various diseases and conditions. In nasal congestion, the most effective is steam inhalation of water laced with either eucalyptus or selected essential oils. All what is required is a kettle of water added with some eucalyptus oil, a large piece of cloth and breathing of the hot steam. However this strategy is not for all. People suffering from heart conditions, pregnant women or those experiencing nervous system disorders may not get the desired results. There are a number of side effects arising from this treatment and may vary from nausea, general tiredness and headaches.

3. Decongestants

Decongestants are a group of drugs that decrease nasal congestion. They result to the narrowing of the blood vessels going to the nasal cavity. These range from tablets to nasal sprays. The rule of thumb when it comes to decongestants is that they should not be used for more than three days as the can result to dependency leading to the nose feeling stuffed and resulting to a rebound effect after withdrawal. Pseudoephedrine is one of the most popular nasal decongestants and it can be bought over the counter. Due to the fact that they can be abused to produce drugs such as the methamphetamine, they are restricted and there is a limit on what can be acquired over the counter. Common side effects include the dizziness and nervousness. People suffering from conditions such as glaucoma and blood pressure should only take decongestants after consulting their doctors.

4. Nasal irrigation - Neti Pot

Nasal irrigation is the rinsing of the nasal passages with salty water, sometimes its referred to neti pot. It is a do-at- home procedure that is often recommended by doctors to reduce nasal infections and hay fever. Adequate research has been conducted to establish the effectiveness of this method towards the treatment of nasal congestion and the results have been satisfactory. According to a report published by the University of Wisconsin, nasal irrigation is not only a good strategy for treatment but also for prevention.  Carrying out daily nasal cleaning for patients with chronic sinus problems can indeed relief the respiratory problems. The key ingredients used include salt, baking soda and warm water mixed at a recommended proportion. The exercise involves the use of a syringe and then squeezing the content through one nostril for it to be emitted from the other. This exercise is repeated until the emitted water is clear of any mucous or debris. The general precaution in this exercise is to ensure the water is adequately sterilized. This is important as complications arising from Naegleria fowleri, which is a substance contained in unsterilized water, can be fatal. Read the FDA’s warnings and concerns regarding the usage of neti pot.

5. Drinking lots of fluids

Nasal congestion and other allergies can be prevented and treated by taking a lot of fluids. Nasal congestion arises after the blockage of the sinuses by fluids. Imbibing a lot of fluids such as hot water and tea can indeed help greatly. Basil water for instance has been recognized as one of the best fluids when it comes to decongesting. Other home remedy experts recommend drinking water with lemon and honey. It would help much if the mixture is inhaled to loosen any mucous stuck in the upper respiratory system. The mixture is then taken when warm. This can be repeated thrice a day for three consecutive days.

6. Proper diet

Nasal congestion sinusitis and allergies can be triggered by some types of foods. It is hard to establish the kind of foods that cause a bad reaction but paying attention to what has been eaten prior to the emerging of the symptoms can go a long way towards establishing this. Experts however point out that taking food high in sugars can lead to nasal congestion in some individuals. At the same time, there are specific dietary ingredients that can aid in treating these allergies. Food rich in peppers can greatly assist. They consist of capsaicin that works best by producing nasal secretions that hamper the production of mucous or drainage of the existing mucous.

The remedies of nasal congestion and related allergic reactions are quite numerous. Decongestants, Antihistamines and inhalation therapies are recognized as some of the best treatments. Importantly though it is always advisable to avoid conditions and foods that result into allergic reactions. For advanced cases it is crucial to consult a physician.
