A U.S study shows that hurricanes are getting stronger and stronger every year, and the reason is yes you guessed it “Global Warming”. Most Americans still remember the catastrophic hurricane back in 2005 Katrina which was one of the five deadliest in the history of the U.S. Hurricane Gustav is the second major hurricane of the 2008 Atlantic hurricane season, and caused major damages and casualties in Haiti, The Dominican Republic, Jamaica, The Cayman Islands, Cuba and the United States.
A collaboration between University of Wisconsin “Professor James Elsner: and Florida State University “Thomas Jagger” found that the strongest tropical cyclone are becoming stronger particularly over the North Atlantic and Indian oceans, in addition, the ocean temperature plays and important role in driving that trend.
statistically speaking, wind speed for the strongest tropical storms increased from an average of 140mph to 156mph from 1981 to 2006. During the same period of time, the ocean temperature increased form 28.2 Celsius to 28.5 degrees Celsius. According to the National Hurricane Ike made a landfall on Cube with maximum sustained winds near 135mph, Ike is a category four hurricane and its expected to enter the Gulf of Mexico on Wednesday September 10th.
